Please read this to your child then read it together with them and then have them read it to you. Have them practice reading each day this week and then on Friday I will be testing them on the reading and the cvc word cards.
Due:
Parents, please have your child read through this story daily to you. The goal is that they can read it by themselves by Friday when I will test them on it. It is included in their homework packet that they will bring home tomorrow. Please also have them read the word cards daily for fluency and automaticity.

Here are some suggested questions to answer after you watch the mini-lesson:
1. Why do birds lay eggs in the spring?
2. What did this lesson make you curious about? What other questions do you have about birds?
Bonus Activity: Can you build a nest that will hold an egg? Give it a try. If you can go outside, gather twigs, leaves, and grass to build with — just like birds do! If you can’t go out, use torn paper, rolled up paper, and string. You can’t use glue or tape! When you’re done building, test your nest with something round — like a marble, or even a real egg!

1. Why do animals come back after going to warm places in winter?
2. What did this lesson make you curious about? What other questions do you have?
Bonus Activity: Some animals travel thousands of miles every year to find food or have babies. It’s amazing that they can find their way back home! Imagine if you traveled far away from your home, without a phone, a computer, or a map. How would you find your way back home? What clues could help you find your way? Write or draw the story of how you would find your way back home.

Here are some suggested questions to answer after you watch the mini-lesson:
1. Why do bears hibernate?
2. What did this lesson make you curious about? What other questions do you have about bears?
Bonus Activity: Humans don’t hibernate to survive the winter. We need shelter when the weather gets cold. Look around you. What materials do you see that could help you build a shelter inside to keep you warm? Are there blankets, cardboard boxes, chairs, or pillows that you could use? Draw what your winter shelter would look like using the things you see. If you can, ask an adult, and try to build it!

Bonus Activity: You can safely study how the Sun moves by watching shadows. On a sunny day, find an object in your home that is in full sunlight. Look to see if it’s making a shadow. Then, use two stickers to mark the edges of the shadow. Wait an hour. Look again. Where is the shadow now? Where are the stickers? If you have time, check the shadow every hour to see what happens!

1. How do polar animals survive the cold?
2. What did this lesson make you curious about? What other questions do you have about polar animals?
Bonus Activity: Some penguins stand in the snow for months while waiting for their eggs to hatch. To keep the eggs warm, penguins hold them on their feet—even when walking around! Give it a try! Use a roll of toilet paper as your penguin egg. Find something to hold on to, like a wall or a couch. Tip your feet so you’re standing on your heels, like a penguin. Put the “egg” on your feet. Now waddle like a penguin! How far can you go before dropping the “egg”? Challenge your friends to beat your record.

We will be reading this book in class but please reread it at home. Talk about making goals for the new year with your family. Simple K goals like: learn my sight words, learn all of the alphabet letter names and sounds, clean my room, follow directions the first time given, help my family, etc. Then go to the 2021 Goals slides and watch the Elmo video. When you are done watching find the slide with your assigned school number and check that your name is on it. Type in your goals for this year, 2021. You will be able to then read all of your classmates goals as well.
